Still largely undiscovered, the aptly-named Panorama Region is a stunning area of fertile forests, towering mountains, impressive canyons and tumbling waterfalls. Easily accessible by car from Kruger, this is the perfect location to spend a few days relaxing after a safari in outstanding natural beauty. With incredible views, both nature lovers and photographers will be enraptured by this area.
This outstanding area of spectacular natural beauty lies at the eastern-most part of the Drakensberg Mountains and as a tourist area, remains relatively untouched. For those who are self-driving, the journey from Kruger is a treat, as you meander through a series of interesting towns, villages and national monuments, all the while surrounded by awe-inspiring natural landscapes.
We think that one of the most stunning parts of the region is the Blyde River Canyon, widely recognised as the third largest canyon in the world. Outstanding views appear at every turn, accompanied by a mesmerising array of wildlife and birds. The upper reaches of the canyon are home to mountain reedbuck and baboon troops, zebra roam the woodlands, while hippo and crocodile lurk in the emerald green waters below.
We’d recommend a stop at God’s Widow, one of the most magnificent vantage points in the area, where dramatic cliffs drop away to grassy plains. To stand here looking out over the horizon is a humbling experience and it’s safe to say, that the photographic opportunities here are some of South Africa’s finest. We also particularly enjoy visiting the Bourke’s Luck Potholes, which are an eerie series of rock formations formed by whirlpools at the confluence of the Treur and Blyde rivers.
As well as admiring the scenery, there are many activities in the Panorama Region to keep you busy, including walking trails, bird spotting and a visit to Pilgrim’s Rest, a 19th century gold mining town, reconstructed to make a living museum. This will give you a valuable insight into what life in the area used to be like. For adrenaline junkies, there are many extreme sports to occupy you. We can arrange white water rafting on the Blyde River, where the rapids will get your heart beating and your blood pumping. You can also experience the thrill of bungee jumping, rock climbing and canyon swings. For those wishing to see the entire region in all its glory, we can organise a helicopter ride or hot air balloon trip, to help you really appreciate all the Panorama Region has to offer.
