Visit the Gangtey Goenpa
Set on a forest-clad hill, overlooking the verdant Phobjikha valley, Gangtey Goenpa is a beautiful and highly significant monastery and a visit here provides an opportunity to explore the Nyingma sect of Bhutanese Buddhism.
Standing high above the forests and villages of the Phobjikha valley, Gangtey Goenpa is an ornately decorated, colourful monastery whose vibrant hues contrast against the lush greenery of its surrounds. Founded in 1613 by Pema Thinley, the grandson and reincarnation of Pema Lingpa, the monastery is today home to 300 lay-monks who study the Nyingma sect of Buddhism, as well as being the seat of the 9th reincarnation of Pema Lingpa. Wander through the complex, past monks deep in meditative study, their rich red robes adding a further flash of colour to the landscape.
