In the centre of Lake Malawi lies a tiny island, Likoma Island. Famous for its stunning lodge, Kaya Mawa, the Island also boasts another little gem: St Peter's Cathedral.
A stay on Likoma Island is magical enough, but explore a little further to the main town (named after the Island) and walk up the dusty main street and you will find an incredible monument: St Peter's Cathedral, the third largest cathedral in Africa! This incredible place was built back at the turn of the last century and is, amazingly, the same size as Winchester Cathedral. A visit here is fascinating, both culturally and architecturally - the cathedral is filled with carved soapstone statues and the stained glass windows, dating back over one hundred years, are in pristine condition.
From Kaya Mawa you can walk, cycle or even quad bike to the cathedral - and if you are there on a Sunday it's a wonderful experience to attend one of the church services. The Likoma choir are a revelation, and the acoustics in the cathedral only add to the experience. Afterwards, wander down into Likoma Town and enjoy a Malawi shandy at one of the many cafes.
