Hidden among lofty cedars above a remote and mesmerisingly beautiful inlet on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, West Coast Wilderness Lodge is a fabulous small lodge offering a chance to completely disconnect from the modern world and plug into nature. The lodge is a three-hour drive from Vancouver (or a spectacular 45-minute floatplane ride away), and is in the heart of an adventurer’s heaven, with glacial fjords, islands, lakes, waterfalls and pristine rainforest to explore. The 26 stylishly simple rooms and suites are the essence of cosy contemporary rusticity and are designed to let nature be the star. All have private balconies that give onto a breathtaking ocean vista or a quiet forest scene, and you can spend hours sitting out and watch an osprey swoop for fish or a shy deer emerge from the forest. Several of the suites have pull-out sofa beds, making them ideal for families. While there are satellite TVs in the rooms, the wilderness location means that service is spotty. You may also want to know that Wi-Fi is only available in the main lodge.
The lodge’s Inlets Restaurant has an ambitiously eclectic menu of Pacific Coast cuisine that is more often than not a hit, but the location overlooking a scattering of islands out to sea, is simply stunning. After dinner, enjoy a number of warming options: settle in by the fireplace for a chat or a read; take a relaxing soak in the cliff-side hot tub; or head for the outside fire pit to toast s’mores and enjoy a nightcap. Further stress-busting is on hand in West Coast Wilderness Lodge’s Eco Spa, where you can enjoy a hot sea stone massage or let the excellent therapists coax and knead your body into submission.
The adventure potential at West Coast Wilderness Lodge is all but unlimited. The lodge maintains its own zodiac for trips into magisterial Princess Louisa Inlet, with its First Nation pictographs and thundering waterfalls. You can shoot the Skookumchuck Rapids or gently paddle the Sechelt Inlet in a kayak; get airborne with a heli-flight or floatplane ride that can take you to remote wilderness lakes and high alpine flower meadows for a hike; go mountain biking or trekking along rainforest trails; or head into nearby Egmont village for an understanding of the First Nation culture or to lend the local prawn boaters a hand. Whether you want to get out and experience it all, or simply bask in the wondrous stillness of the place, West Coast Wilderness Lodge makes a fantastic place to conclude a Canadian itinerary.
When to go
The Sunshine Coast, along with Vancouver is located in the Georgia Basin within the rainshadow of Vancouver Island. This creates a mild, sunny climate year round and the summer is especially warm, and dry with highs of up to 30°C, perfect for enjoying the great outdoors.
