Taylor's Hill is a modern and stylish boutique hotel located just south of Kandy. Surrounded by several acres of lawns and gardens with views over the distant hills, Taylor's Hill offers an elegant retreat to while away the days exploring tea plantations and the unspoiled countryside, or for discovering nearby Kandy and its heritage sites. Located in the setting of a working tea estate, the property is not only enclosed by a lush green hillscape, but it also offers a fantastic insight into the history and legacy of Ceylon tea. Its name comes from the famous tea pioneer James Taylor, who once resided at the nearby Loolecondera Estate, home to some of Sri Lanka's oldest tea bushes.
With only five rooms, the property has a very intimate atmosphere. Each room is a stylishly decorated, furnished with both antique and contemporary touches and colourful wallpaper to reflect the traditional Sri Lankan estate aesthetic. They are all fitted with a luxurious en-suite bathroom and exude both comfort and opulence.
The food served at Taylor's Hill is delicious, a variety of Asian and Sri Lankan dishes infused with traditional British flare. In line with tea estate traditions, there is also afternoon tea offered, serving a delectable array of freshly baked treats. This tea can also be packed up and eaten elsewhere in the property's endless lawns and gardens.
Taylor's Hill has two sitting rooms, a T.V room, a snooker room and a children's playroom within the main building. Outside, there is enough to occupy all the family including a swimming pool, tennis court, badminton court, croquet and walking, biking and birding trails. Further afield, Kandy's renowned Temple of the Tooth, the Botanical Peredeniya Gardens and the Ceylon Tea museum are also within easy reach from Taylor's Hill.
When to go
Sri Lanka is considered a sunny year round destination; there is always somewhere experiencing good weather on the island. However, there are huge regional differences. The Southwest ‘Yala’ Monsoons brings rain to the west and southwest coast, as well as the hill country, from April/May to September. During this time the north and east coasts are good. The northeast ‘Mahe’ monsoon is less extreme and brings rain to the east and north during October and November. This monsoon can bring a bit of rain to the south as well. Put simply; head to the south, central, hill country and western areas between December and March and ideally head to the north and eastern areas between April and September. We can never guarantee good weather but believe this is a good guide to follow.
