With a reputation for contemporary style and elegance, Zannier Hotels have continued to raise the bar with Phum Baitang. Standing in eight-acres of tropical gardens and glistening green rice fields, the property comprises 45 wooden stilted villas built in Khmer style, reflecting Cambodia’s heritage and history. Phum Baitang translates as ‘Green Village’ and the beautiful rural surroundings are a feature of the hotel. Yet while the styling is traditional, the interior design is all about luxury and comfort, albeit with a rustic twist evident in the banana leaf shutters, rattan furniture, dark wooden floors and earthy tones. Phum Baitang is ideally placed for both couples and families looking for a peaceful retreat to explore the nearby temples of Angkor. In fact, the temple complex is just 10-minutes away. It is also conveniently placed for Siem Reap Airport and the city itself, which are both just a short 15-minute journey from the property.
There are 25 Terrace Villas, which include a spacious private terrace for relaxation and 20 Pool Villas, with private plunge pools, small garden and terrace. Inspired by traditional Khmer homes, the wooden villas are stilted, with high quality furnishings and interiors full of understated luxury. The villas include a sumptuous bathroom with huge free-standing bathtub and rain shower, large comfortable bed, locally-sourced wooden furniture, Wi-Fi, flat-screen TV, DVD Player and wonderful linens. There are two dining options. For international delights head to Hang Bay offering fusion cuisine, or for Cambodian flavours head to Bay Phsar. Guests can also choose to dine in their villa or opt for a private dining experience, overlooking the terraced rice paddies. For daytime refreshment, there’s a poolside bar but in the evening, relaxation and cocktails can be found in the Cigar and Cocktail Lounge, based in a cosy and charming 100-year old Cambodian farmhouse.
The centre piece of Phum Baitang is a 50-metre infinity pool and sundeck, where you can relax in the sun on a lounger or seek the shade under one of the stylish thatch-roofed pavilions. The spa has a temple-inspired theme and offers a range of luxury treatments and massage. There is also a yoga pavilion, well-equipped fitness room, bikes to borrow and a great Kid’s Club offering a range of educational and entertaining activities. For families and couples wanting to explore Angkor Wat without staying in the busy city of Siem Reap, we would recommend the elegant and tranquil Phum Baitang as an ideal place to stay.
When to go
Cambodia is hot all year round and the best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. It starts to get wetter in May and the wettest months are September and October. It is still possible to visit during this time as rain usually falls as short sharp storms. November is a fantastic month to visit Cambodia as it is very green after the rainy season and the lakes and rivers are full of water.
