Grand Dédale is found only five minutes from the historic town of Wellington, a 30 minute drive from Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, and only 45 minutes from Cape Town International Airport. The old manor house has a library, two lounge areas, a large dining room and a veranda with stunning views over the valley and out towards the Groenberg and Hawekwa Mountains. There is also a large swimming pool and a spa treatment room offering a range of beauty treatments.
The six individually decorated bedrooms reflect the Cape Dutch elegance of the original building, but have all the modern amenities and luxuries to give a homely, comfortable feel. The private thatched cottage dates back to around 1707 and has been beautifully restored as an exclusive accommodation option, ideal for honeymoon couples or guests seeking complete privacy.
The Doolhof Wine Estate offers a wide range of activities for guests to enjoy such as walking, hiking and mountain biking, all on the estate. Alternatively, horse riding, clay pigeon shooting, golf and river rafting are only a short drive away and the charming staff at Grand Dédale are always happy to book any particular activities for guests.
"Doolhof" in Afrikaans means labyrinth, and the Doolhof Estate was named so by early settlers in 1709, due to the hills and vales surrounding the estate, allowing access by only one road in and one road out. The estate and manor house still retain this element of exclusivity and anyone who stays at Grand Dédale is guaranteed complete privacy and tranquillity.
When to go
The Winelands in general are warm and temperate with hot and dry summers running from December to February, with temperatures reaching an average high of 23°C (73°F) during February. Winter runs from June to August where heavy rains, strong winds and temperatures as low as 13°C (55°F) are likely. However, the Cape Winelands are a wonderful place to explore at any time of year with Spring and Autumn especially nice as it is often sunny, but not as warm.
