Sprawling up a hillside on a 150-acre farm adjacent to the Monteverde and Santa Elena reserves, El Establo has outstanding views of Costa Rica’s vulnerable cloud forest. Although not small (there are 155 rooms in nine separate accommodation complexes), El Establo boasts excellent facilities. Among the accommodations, there are a number of different options, including deluxe rooms, master and honeymoon suites. All are spacious and well decorated, with wall-to-wall carpeting, private bathrooms and air conditioning. Certain rooms come equipped with a loft, mini bar and private balcony, and many have stunning views of the Gulf of Nicoya.
El Establo’s two restaurants offer a wide range of options for both lunch and dinner. Las Riendas offers more traditional Costa Rican food and international dishes, while Laggus serves fine cuisine in an elegant atmosphere. Other facilities include swimming pools, sports courts, a games room, gym and spa, where aromatherapy treatments and hot stone massages can be enjoyed.
El Establo runs its own treetop canopy tour designed to allow you to enjoy spectacular views of the Gulf of Nicoya as well as acquainting yourself with the flora and fauna of the cloud forest. There is also a Tarzan swing, rappelling, rope bridges and a short trail network. At night, nocturnal walks with professional guides will reveal a different side to the forest, and you may spot raccoons, armadillos, sloths, kinkajous, frogs and bats amongst others.
When to go
Year round destination, although November to April are the best months for sunshine. The ‘Green’ season, from May to October, is a good time to visit: it’s sunny in the mornings with rain in the afternoons. The quietest period is April to early June. The rain can be particularly strong in September and October.
