Located just a few blocks from the centre of the charming adobe village of San Pedro de Atacama, Awasi is a stylish lodge offering superb desert adventures into the arid Atacama. This boutique lodge has been exquisitely designed from local stone, adobe and wood, and consists of just eight spacious thatch-roofed suites decked out with colourful local textiles and furnishings, each with a private patio, solarium, outdoor shower, reading armchairs and beautiful wooden floors. Spacious outdoor lounges warmed by open fireplaces and a swimming pool with comfortable day beds and a library provide plenty of places for relaxing and contemplating the immensity of the desert, and the food at Awasi is sublime featuring contemporary takes on Atacameña cooking using regional organic produce supplied by local farming communities such as purple potatoes, patasca, quinoa and chañar. They don't actually have a bar menu; instead you can request whatever you feel like and they will make it for you!
Each room at Awasi is assigned a private guide and a comfortable and modern 4WD vehicle to embark on special outings to the numerous volcanoes, dry salt lakes, and other natural attractions that make the Atacama Desert so unforgettable. The vehicles are equipped with communications and a GPS system, allowing guests to reach places that are not otherwise easily accessible. Trips are tailored to your personal interests and may include a visit to El Tatio Geysers, flamingo-watching on the Salar de Atacama, an expedition to the high desert lakes of Miscanti and Miñiques, and cultural tours of the Atacama villages. Hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and volcano climbs can all be organised, while those who appreciate more leisurely pursuits will love the art classes, bird watching, astronomy, cooking demonstrations and photography classes. When to go
Day time temperatures are luminous and agreeable all year round. A characteristic of the desert climate is the marked fluctuation in temperature between day and night. In winter (June, July and August) the average temperature is 22ºC during the day and at night it goes down to around 4ºC; temperatures can occasionally go below freezing. In summer (December to February) the temperature varies between 28ºC during the day and 16ºC at night. During these months the temperature can reach 32ºC. January-March can sometimes receive a little rainfall and cloudy skies.
On February 2, the biggest festival in San Pedro, Festival de la Candelaria, features a large parade of bands and dancers.
