Tucked away in the countryside near La Fortuna with fantastic views of Arenal volcano, the sprawling resort village known as Hotel Arenal Manoa is set on a working dairy farm that contains 80 secluded bungalows. Comfortable and spacious, each bungalow features a cheerful, bright tropical décor and dark wood furnishings, and comes with an oversized en-suite bathroom, air conditioning, cable TV, a small garden area and a private terrace, where you can sit out on your rocking chair and watch Arenal puff and steam.
The main building houses a restaurant beside the magnificent swimming pool, consisting of three connected pools and a Jacuzzi surrounding a wet bar – where they have a nightly happy hour. On the other side of the hotel, near the reception, you'll find a second bar and a natural thermal pool. A little pampering is easy to find at Manoa. The spa provides a variety of services from aromatherapy, to reflexology and traditional Swedish massages.
Tours of the farm are available daily at 2pm (book in advance), and will take you along a trail through the farm's ornamental flower fields to the ranch where Manoa's farmers keep the livestock. Along the way guests will learn about the history of the farm and cow milking. Other excursions include visits to Arenal Volcano, forest hikes, white water rafting, and horse riding to La Fortuna waterfalls.
When to go
Arenal is fascinating all year round, though November to April are the best months for sunshine. December to March is high season and the whole Arenal area is inundated with tourists. The ‘Green’ season, from May to September, is a good time to visit: it’s sunny in the mornings with rain in the afternoons. The quietest period is April to early June. The rain can be particularly strong in September and October.
