Set in a lush garden enclosure just outside bustling Siem Reap, Amansara is a sanctuary of peace and well-mannered luxury that is just minutes from the awe-inspiring temple complex of Angkor Wat. Originally the private residence of King Norodom Sihanouk, the resort was acquired by Aman Resorts in 2002, who meticulously reconstructed it drawing on old photographs and local knowledge. Twenty four exclusive suites, half of which boast private plunge pools, are luxuriously decorated in a soothingly understated Indochinese palette of grey, white and ivory offset by rich hardwoods, and come with private courtyards and soothing water features.
After time spent exploring, you can relax by the sinuous slate swimming pool or be pampered in the signature spa overlooking a tranquil reflection pond as you succumb to treatments featuring organic Cambodian herbal and botanical extracts. The Roof Terrace offers lunch and early evening drinks (and invigorating dawn yoga sessions) while the circular Dining Room, previously the screening room of King Sihanouk, with its soaring ceiling and shaded terrace is the focal point of the property and offers both traditional Khmer and Western cuisines featuring the freshest of seasonal produce.
The Aman guides are simply amazing and can ensure that when you visit Angkor Wat, you’ll pretty much avoid other tourists. Rise early and meet your guide who will take you in a private tuk-tuk to the East Gate of the Angkor, where you can wander through the still, pre-dawn half light towards the temple which becomes eerily visible as daylight emerges. There are no people, no sounds – it’s simply magical.

When to go
Cambodia is hot all year round and the best time to visit is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. It starts to get wetter in May and the wettest months are September and October. It is still possible to visit during this time as rain usually falls as short sharp storms. November is a fantastic month to visit Cambodia as it is very green after the rainy season and the lakes and rivers are full of water.
