September

September sees visitors flock to Chichen Itza to coincide with the fall equinox, when shadows cast upon the staircase create the illusion of a snake slithering down the steps. If this doesn’t strike your fancy then read on for our other suggestions!

With whale season only lasting a short two months, September is prime season for visiting the Valdes Peninsula in Argentina. Visitors during this time will also be rewarded with sightings of Punta Tombo penguins looking for their squad, which takes place between September and April.

Chile’s ski resorts are still coated with the finest powder, making this perfect for those seeking a winter adventure. For those in Chile over the 18th and 19th, prepare to party as the country celebrates a huge national holiday.

Moving North, Bolivia’s capital La Paz celebrates the anniversary of Tiwanaku on the 14th, whilst in Loja, Ecuador, the 15th brings the Fiesta de la Virgin del Cisne- pilgrimages are made, and dances, fairs and cockfights form a major part of the celebrations. In the Otavalo region of Ecuador, the first week in September is when locals pay tribute to the Virgin of Montserrat in the Fiesta del Yamor.
