For those looking to keep the Christmas festivities going then a trip to Latin America is the perfect way to put to rest those winter blues! Colourful celebrations with a fun Latin vibe abound throughout January; here is our pick of the best!
For colourful costumes, parades and street parties there is no better place than Ecuador. Carnival is the biggest celebration of the year here, and festivities last from January right through until March. Carnival is mainly celebrated in the provinces of Bolivar and Cotopaxi, and frenzied water fights are also a huge part of the fun, particularly in Cuenca.
One of the more unusual celebrations takes place in Pasto, Colombia. The ‘Carnaval de Blancos y Negros’ sees people taking to the streets with black and white powders, a tribute to the slaves and their masters who did the very same during the Spanish rule.
For something with a little more colour, head to Antigua, Guatemala to enjoy a series of concerts and be dazzled by fireworks igniting the sky. Santiago in Chile also celebrates the ‘Santiago a Mil Theatre festival’, a cultural delight which sees evenings taken up with performances, concerts and lots of vibrant nightlife.
For the best January sunshine head to the Caribbean coastlines of Venezuela or Colombia, the perfect time to visit the stunning islands of Margarita, Los Roques, San Andres or Tayrona National park. January is also the start of Mexico’s peak season, which lasts through until May.
