Home to a number of Panama's most impressive natural attractions, the Chiriqui Highlands offer dramatic volcanic scenery, with views over both the Pacific and Caribbean oceans from some of the higher peaks. The cooler climate makes it a pleasant retreat from the hot and humid lowlands, and the trekking conditions are near perfect.
As well as some truly stunning scenery, the Chiriqui Highlands form the habitat for a wide variety of bird species, and make this an exciting destination for budding twitchers. If birding is not for you then there are a number of other activities to be enjoyed in the region such as walking, mountain biking, white water rafting and horse riding.
Boquete is the main town in the area and provides the best accommodation, as well as a great base from which to explore the surrounding coffee plantations. The world's best coffee, Geisha, derives from this very region, so it is well worth ensuring you get yourself a cup of this rich and aromatic bean while you have the chance.
