Best places to go horse riding in Ecuador
Horse riding has been a way of life in Ecuador’s sierra region for many centuries, with Ecuadorian horses famous for their strength and ability to trot up steep slopes at high altitudes. Horse riding is one of the best ways to get in touch with traditional Ecuadorian culture, as well as being a great way to soak up the country’s mesmerising landscape.
Hacienda La Alegria
One of the finest places to enjoy horse riding is undoubtedly Hacienda La Alegria, a charming property situated in the heart of chagra (Andean cowboy) country in Ecuador’s Pichincha region. Here you can spend your days cantering through the Avenue of Volcanoes before returning to the warm hospitality of a family run Hacienda. Beginner equestrians can start slow with day rides on well-mannered horses, whilst those more experienced may want to opt for over-night and multi-day horse riding trips in and around Cotopaxi National Park.
Another great option is Hacienda Zuleta, an award-winning farm just outside of Otavalo. Enveloped by the supreme natural beauty of the Andes, Zuleta offers 3 to 10 day riding programs on Zuleteño horses, a variety known for its smooth trot. Horse riding here encompasses charming valleys, snow-topped mountains, local villages and unbeatable views from above the clouds.
