Brazil: A land defined by football
Football is ingrained in Brazilian culture and it is a strong passion of the entire nation. Our Brazil specialist and football enthusiast, Sam, gives us the lowdown on why Brazil is one of the most successful footballing nations in the world, and what makes this passion so deep-rooted in Brazilian culture.
Football is the most popular sport in Brazil and a huge passion of Brazilians, who often refer to their country as "o País do Futebol" ("the country of football"). Brazil currently stands as the most successful country in football history, with five world cup victories and many of the best players in the world, such as Ronaldinho and Pele, hailing from Brazil. From a young age Brazilians are surrounded by football, playing it in the streets of favelas, watching local matches, or hearing of Brazil’s international success; it is a part of their everyday life and forms the basis of the local Brazilian culture.
During the early development of football in Brazil, the lack of transportation infrastructure made national tournaments unfeasible, so state tournaments developed. Still today, these state tournaments are the most rivalled and contested matches in Brazil and massively reinforce local support. Brazil won the bid to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup and it is estimated that the preparations cost Brazilian government US$14 billion, making it the most expensive World Cup to date. Brazilians felt that ‘football was coming home’, and every time Brazil played a game, citizens were given the day off to support the team. This huge amount of investment improved nationwide transport systems and developed some world class football stadiums, such as the Maracanã in Rio, in which Brazil can continue their football success.
Brazil is nuts about football, but it’s also a country fuelled by Samba beats, legendary beach culture and dramatic wilderness landscapes, making it a country made for travel.
