Northern Sri Lanka
Shut off from the outside world for many years, Northern Sri Lanka is as unique as it is diverse. With Jaffna at its heart, many believe this region has more similarities with Southern India than the rest of Sri Lanka and we don't disagree. It's completely unique to the rest of the island and completes a comprehensive journey through Sri Lanka.
With a large Tamil population and an enthralling history, this part of Sri Lanka has retained such a unique character. Stuck in isolation for over 20 years during the civil war, Jaffna and its surrounding islands feel untouched. For anyone with a deep interest in the country's turbulent history, this is the place to visit due the richness of what is on offer. Travelling to this region has also become much easier in recent years and you can combine Jaffna with Anuradhapura and Trincomalee quite easily.
