An adventure to the Kong Lor Caves is a chance to see one of Southeast Asia’s most impressive natural wonders and some of most the stunning scenery in Laos. The spectacular caves run for over seven kilometres under the mountains, at points reaching 90 metres wide and 100 metres high. The Hin Boun River meanders through the caves, and so much of the journey is by longtail boat.
Given that the area is quite a distance from most of Laos’ travel hubs, the villages and the surrounding countryside are currently fairly untouched in terms of mass tourism, therefore this a great place to get off the beaten track.
The sleepy, rural atmosphere contrasts with the dramatic scenery and pulse-quickening adrenaline rush as you venture in the dark of the caves. Within the caves there are striking stalagmites and stalactites, and upon emerging at the other side of the mountains, it is possible to take a stroll around the gorgeous countryside and local villages before travelling back through the caves once more.
