Turtle Island National Park
The Turtle Island National Park is made up three tiny islands off the coast of Sabah in the glimmering Sulu Sea. So named because of their famous green turtles, this turtle sanctuary is has been renowned for its work rescuing and protecting endangered turtles since 1927.
The full-time rangers protect the new turtle eggs from predators in the island’s breeding centre before releasing them back into the sea. The most common turtles seen here are the green and hawksbill variety who visit the shores of Turtle Island almost every night to lay their eggs and visitors have the opportunity to witness this truly rare and magical event, particularly during peak season when as many as a hundred turtles can be seen on the beach at one time.
While on the island you can observe the collection of eggs, tagging of mother turtles and releasing of baby turtles into the sea. Seligaan Island, easily accessible by speedboat from Sandakan, boasts the largest turtle conservation scheme of all the islands and is the best place to view the turtle landings. As this event usually occurs during the night, overnight chalets are provided for guests that wish to witness this rare and enchanting experience. A trip to the conservation centre may also provide a fantastic opportunity to handle the new turtle hatchlings before they are released back into the sea. Making the visit to the incredible Turtle Island National Park is highly recommended as it offers a unique insight into the life of these incredible ancient sea creatures.
