Gross National Happiness
The concept of Gross National Happiness, or GNH, was written into Bhutan’s constitution as an indicator of national prosperity in 2008. Challenging the more familiar measure of GDP as a way to quantify the success of the country, Bhutan proudly puts the happiness of its citizens first. Living in pursuit of national happiness has confirmed its almost mythical status as a real-life Shangri-La.
Once the absolute monarchy was dissolved in 2006, Bhutan’s transition to democracy was underpinned by the four pillars of GNH; good governance, sustainable socioeconomic development, preservation of Bhutanese culture and environmental conservation. It has since become a blueprint for daily life in Bhutan; free education and healthcare have been introduced; strict limits on construction have been put in place; meditation classes have been added to the curriculum; plastic bags have been banned and an entry tax for visitors has been implemented. All these factors have contributed to an ever strengthening economy and increased life expectancy, bolstering the notion that society develops most effectively when material and spiritual harmony occur.
GNH is a primary focus at both an individual and national level and the government actively encourages its citizens to find a permanent state of contentment through good health and education rather than material goods. Now, the four pillars of GNH are at the heart of the country’s values and spiritual traditions posing the question, “is Bhutan the happiest place in the world?”.
