The Kruger National Park is South Africa’s premier wildlife destination and is one of the biggest attractions in this diverse country. Those wanting a luxury safari experience away from the crowds tend to favour the private concessions and here we give our guide to these.
Thornybush Game Reserve
Offering deluxe accommodation, a large range of children’s activities, frequent Big Five sightings and plentiful prey grazing the pristine bush and savannah, Thornybush Game Reserve, has everything you need to create an unforgettable safari experience.
The reserve lies in the rolling Lowveld savannah, adjacent to Kruger National Park. It is home to the Big Five and many other wildlife species, so you can expect to see hippo, a wide variety of antelope species and some incredible birdlife. Unlike some other reserves, Thornybush is fully fenced, which can be both a positive and a negative. While the drawback is that the animals are not free to move between the reserve and the main park, we think the advantage of fencing is that the same amount of game will always be in the reserve, resulting in continuously successful game sightings.
In our experience, Thornybush is a great option for families, who appreciate the enclosed nature of the reserve and the range of activities on offer to keep the children entertained, particularly the ‘Ranger in Training’ packs. Guests can enjoy both dawn and dusk safaris in open vehicles with fully qualified rangers and trackers, while bush walks are also on offer for the more adventurous.
