Parc National des Volcans
The magnificent Virunga Mountains consist of six spectacular volcanoes, situated on the borders of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Parc National Des Volcans is a perfect destination for wildlife and adventure – it is home to the famous Mountain Gorillas, as well as being an excellent location for birding. Caving, hiking and cycling are amongst the other activities available.
This magnificent national park is primarily known for the mountain gorillas, where there remains about half of the world’s remaining population. Visiting one of the seven habituated mountain gorilla families requires a gorilla tracking permit which costs approximately $765 per person. Only 56 permits are available each day and do need to be arranged well in advance.
The endangered golden monkeys are boisterous and entertaining. They are becoming increasingly used to humans, but as of yet, little is known about them. They share the same threats that gorillas face, and their numbers have decreased over the years.
In addition, Parc National des Volcans has over 200 bird species, as well as elephants and buffaloes, making it an ideal destination to experience wild animals in their natural environment.
