Rwanda Itineraries
For many people, a trip to Rwanda means a visit to the Mountain Gorillas in Parc National des Volcans, famous for its portrayal in ‘Gorillas in the Mist’ and former home to acclaimed primatologist Dian Fossey. Gorilla tracking in the misty Virunga Mountains is a wonderful experience that many people want to cross off their ‘bucket list’ and it never disappoints. Rwanda has wonderful transport infrastructure so it is possible to fly in for a long weekend with the Gorillas, but there is far more to this country than this.
The gorilla habitat of the Virunga Mountains offers world-class trekking while nearby Lake Kivu is a beautiful and unlikely beach and relaxation hotspot. To the south of the country the vast Nyungwe forest is a prime Chimpanzee habitat and also features Africa’s only canopy walk experience where guests can get a birds-eye view of the steaming rain forest.
Lovers of traditional game can visit Akagera National park which while decimated during years of poaching in the 1970s-1990s is now recovering and is one of East Africa’s most beautiful savannah parks.
All of Rwanda is accessed from Kigali, the Capital which houses the Kigali Genocide memorial, an essential stop for travellers to understand the rapid recovery and understanding shown by the tiny nation over the last 20 years.
