Deciding on how to travel around Namibia is primarily down to time and cost. Those short on time should opt for scheduled light aircraft flights. Most remote accommodation has its own airstrip or one very close by – and one real positive is that the views on these flights are spectacular. The most popular way to travel around Namibia though is a self-drive holiday; a more adventurous and more affordable option than flying - it is a hugely rewarding way to travel. Also worth considering is a combination of internal flights and driving.
Self-drive gives you complete freedom, it is a chance to get off the beaten track without compromise. Soak up the ever-changing scenery as it passes your window and get to grips with the stark contrasts of Namibia’s landscapes as you drive into the perpetually hazy horizon. From gargantuan sand dunes to lush green parkland, the roads pass through the heartland of Namibia, taking in its showstopper sights.
Routes differ between each individual itinerary, and can be completely tailor-made to combine the very best of Namibia. Most itineraries begin in the capital, Windhoek and incorporate the country’s highlights: Etosha National Park, Damaraland, Swakopmund and Sossusvlei before returning to the capital with dusty tyres and a well-thumbed map.
From desert homesteads, to bush camps and safari lodges, the accommodation differs just as much as the terrain allowing you to really get under the skin of this captivating country. To minimise the great distances, short flights are ideal to quickly manoeuvre from A to B, whilst for those less pressed for time, a 4x4 is the perfect vehicle for a journey on the road less travelled.
