During a trip to Costa Rica back in May, Latin America specialist Scarlett visited the Kids Saving the Rainforest Wildlife Reserve and Sanctuary – a project developed by Janine Licare and Aislin Livingstone when they were just 9 years old. This superb itinerary begins by heading to Tortuguero National Park, where a thick jungle of exceptional biodiversity nestles up against beaches most famous for observing turtle nesting! Next you will have the opportunity to partake in an array of exciting activities under the gaze of the impressive Arenal Volcano, including zip-lines and hanging bridges amongst the tree tops, before witnessing the interesting array of plant life in Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.
Far from finished, you then start to explore the fascinating Rincon de la Vieja volcano from a charming working cattle ranch, where you can try your hand at horse riding amongst other activities. After so much action, you end your adventure with a well deserved few days of blissful relaxation on beautiful Tamarindo beach.
Day 1 - 2 : San Jose, Costa Rica
Stay at Alta Hotel for 1 night
Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy time at leisure before your adventure starts tomorrow.
Days 2 - 4 : Tortuguero, Costa Rica
Stay at Mawamba Lodge for 2 nights
Cross the continental divide and head down to the Caribbean lowlands. Enjoy lunch before a hike in the forest upon arrival, followed by a visit to Tortuguero Town to meet the locals.
During your stay experience the awakening of the rain forest on a boat tour along the narrow canals of the National Park. All the while keep your eye out for toucans, sloths, caiman, turtles, monkeys and more...
Days 4 - 7 : Arenal, Costa Rica
Stay at Arenal Springs Resort for 3 nights
After departing Tortugero by a small boat weaving through the canals, enjoy an early lunch on dry land before crossing banana plantations and local towns towards Arenal.
Whilst here you can horse ride to La Fortuna Waterfall, and take a dip in the refreshing water! Also included is an easy hike in the Arenal Volcano National Park on solidified lava trails, followed by a reinvogorating visit to Tabacon Hot Springs, where dinner is included.
The next day, drive to the Guatuso lowlands and hike in the Tenorio National Park to see the Celeste River Waterfall, and the origin of the Blue River and Lagoon.
Days 7 - 9 : Monteverde, Costa Rica
Stay at Trapp Family Lodge for 2 nights
Scenic transfer by boat across the Arenal Lake followed by a bus journey to Monteverde. Upon arrival you shall hike along the Sky Walk, a series of suspended bridges which take you through the forest canopy, offering great wildlife spotting opportunities.
The next day, hike with a tour guide along the trails of the famous Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.
Days 9 - 11 : Rincon de la Vieja
After arrival from Monteverde, your time here is at leisure to enjoy a number of optional excursions. We recommend a hike on your own in Las Pailas trail of the Rincon de la Vieja National Park, in order to see the wildlife and the volcanic activity.
Days 11 - 14 : Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Stay at Hotel Capitan Suizo for 3 nights
Transfer to the Guanacaste coast, where your time is left open to explore the area at your own pace. Spend your days at leisure, enjoying the beautigul Tamarindo Beach where you can relax to your heart's content.
Day 14 - 15 : San Jose
Morning at your own leisure. In the afternoon shuttle transfer to San Jose and overnight. The next day you will be transferred to the airport in San Jose for your flight back home.
