This itinerary takes you west from Mexico City, to explore the colonial cities of San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato, the up-and-coming town of Tequila and the rugged yet beautiful Pacific coast of Baja California. We’ve picked our favourite boutique hotels, so you can enjoy bustling cities during the day and a calming oasis at night. Lasting 14 nights, this trip is recommended for travellers who have perhaps visited Mexico before, but want a more off-the-beaten track experience to see a side less visited.
Days 1 - 4 : Mexico City, Mexico City and Puebla
Stay at Stara Hamburgo for 3 nights
Upon arrival in Mexico City, pick up your car and drive to your hotel in Mexico’s city centre. You’ll have two days to explore the city at your leisure, with the main Plaza being just a short walk away from your hotel. During the day, try and visit Coyoacan, where the Frida Kahlo museum stands, or take a boat to the floating market of Xochimilco and take a cooking class. You may also wish to visit the Anthropology museum which houses one of the world’s biggest collections of Mayan and Aztec artefacts. On your last morning, you’ll wake up early and grab a quick breakfast before setting off to Teotihuacan; the extraordinary Aztec pyramid complex that lies just north of the city. Opt for a romantic balloon ride or a walking tour around the ruins before heading on to the stunning colonial city of San Miguel de Allende.
Days 4 - 7 : San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
Stay at Hotel Matilda for 3 nights
You will arrive in San Miguel de Allende mid-afternoon. Drop your bags at the lovely Hotel Matilda and venture out into the centre for dinner. The following day, explore the old lavaderos, a place where locals used to gather to wash their clothes in the 18th century. On sunny days, it’s a great place for people watching and observing their laid back way of living. The nearby vineyards of San Miguel are also worth a visit, with Mexican wine increasingly gaining recognition in the industry. Once you’ve exhausted the many sights of this beautiful city, retreat to the hotel’s luxury spa and savour peace and tranquillity after a busy day of exploring.
Days 7 - 9 : Guanajuato, Mexico
Stay at Quinta las Acacias for 2 nights
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before your short one hour drive to the centre of Mexico’s colonial heartland, the city of Guanajuato. Known as the birthplace of Mexican Independence, Guanajuato makes a significantly interesting place to visit, with exceptional architecture and colourful buildings, rich history and culture and quaint plazas that pulsate with live music on a regular basis. The city has a lovely buzz about it, with a distinctive European flair and pretty mountain backdrop. You’ll be staying in the small boutique property of Quinta las Acacias, a luxury property that incorporates contemporary design with traditional Mexican artisan crafts.
Days 9 - 11 : Tequila, Mexico
Stay at Solar de las Animas for 2 nights
You’ll be leaving Guanajuato in the morning for your penultimate stop in the vibrant town of Tequila. Granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 2006, Tequila is the most recent town in Mexico to receive this type of recognition. Blanketed with magical blue agave fields and historical streets, it’s not hard to see why! There are regular lively festivities, which celebrate the local’s history and culture, as well as their modern livelihoods. During your stay, you’ll have the opportunity to go tequila tasting as well as visiting distilleries, where you’ll discover the traditional and modern processes of creating the famous Mexican drink. Solar de las Animas is one of our favourites and there is no doubt you’ll love it just as much as we do!
Days 11 - 15 : Baja California, Mexico
Stay at Rancho Pescadero for 4 nights
The next day, you’ll be up early to drop off your car at the airport, where you’ll fly over to the magnificent Baja California. Land in San Jose del Cabo and make your way to Rancho Pescadero, a peaceful resort style property that allows guests to enjoy Baja’s gorgeous tropical coast. Spend your last few days in the sunshine relaxing, snorkelling or taking a boat trip out to fish for Mahi Mahi and spot playful dolphins. The hotel is a great place to be, with a wonderful restaurant serving delicious international cuisine with Mexican flair, suites with private patios and a lovely pool. On your final day, you’ll be taken back to the airport for your flight home and will be able to reflect on the wonderful experiences you’ve shared with your loved ones on this incredible trip to western Mexico.
