Culture and wildlife are two things that Borneo offers in abundance. Experience the rich history and culture of Borneo in Sarawak, 'land of the hornbill', and then head to the jungles of Sabah to admire the incredible array of fauna and flora, all in style! This holiday is perfect for wildlife aficionados and keen photographers, and anyone wanting to end their holiday on a paradise beach, snorkelling in the waters of the South China Sea.
Days 1 - 3 : Kuching, Malaysia
Stay at Hilton Kuching for 2 nights
Upon arrival in Kuching you will be met by your guide who will transfer you to your hotel. For many people, Kuching is the cultural capital of Borneo, and it is a wonderful city in which to learn about Sarawak’s history, with much evidence of its former colonial past well preserved for today’s visitor. It is an energetic city without being overcrowded, and much can be covered by foot. Spend the rest of the day at you leisure, soaking in the bustling, yet sophisticated atmosphere. Following breakfast at your hotel, you will be driven to Bako Village, approximately 40 minutes from Kuching city centre. Switching to boat (depending on the tide), it is another 25 minutes until you reach the National Park, set on a stunning peninsula. Every guest’s ability can be accommodated as there are several trails inside the park depending on your level of fitness and interest. There is also the option of swimming in the warm waters of the South China Sea or just relaxing on one of the secluded beaches.
Day 3 - 4 : Batang Ai, Borneo
This morning you will depart for the Batang Ai Reservoir. Travelling by road, your journey takes you past lush, scenic countryside dotted with small roadside towns, Bidayuh villages, pepper orchards, rubber and oil palm plantations interspersed with creeper-covered trees of the secondary jungle and the giant trees of primary rainforest. You will board a motorised longboat for the final leg of the journey, passing through the heartland of the Borneo rainforest; one of the oldest in the world. Upon arrival at your ancient longhouse, relax by taking a dip in the cool waters of the Lemanak River.
Day 4 - 5 : Batang Ai, Malaysia
Stay at The Aiman Batang Ai for 1 night
Following a traditional Iban breakfast, this morning will involve a hike as far as the river, following the same jungle trails that were used by headhunters in years gone by. Fortunately, you will just be exploring the lush forest, a favourite spot for wild orangutans! A blowpipe demonstration illustrates how earlier indigenous hunters used the weapon to hunt small game, such as monkeys. Lunch is served at your longhouse before you will be transferred to the Hilton Batang Ai Resort, where a swim is often top of our the list after a day on the trails! No ordinary Hilton Hotel, this traditionally designed resort is modelled on an Iban village complete with longhouses, and is perfectly in keeping with its stunning surroundings.
Day 5 - 6 : Kuching, Malaysia
Stay at Hilton Kuching for 1 night
Travelling by longboat one last time, cross the reservoir before making the journey back to Kuching. The journey takes approximately six hours and you will arrive late in the afternoon.
Days 6 - 8 : Sandakan, Borneo, Malaysia
Stay at Sepilok Nature Resort for 2 nights
From Kuching, a morning transfer will be arranged to take you to Kuching Airport for your flight to Sandakan. Whilst a relatively unremarkable town in many ways, Sandakan is ideal as a base to make a number of superb visits in this area of Sabah, namely Selingan Turtle Island, Lankayan Island, Sepilok and the Kinabatangan River. Upon arrival you will be met by your guide, who will transfer you to Sepilok Nature Resort, your accommodation for the two nights, and where the remainder of the day is yours to spend freely. Enjoy the tropical surroundings of the Sepilok Nature Resort as you embark upon its revered nightly activities, and enjoy your leisure time in this natural paradise.
Days 8 - 10 : Kampung Abai, Borneo, Malaysia
Stay at Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge for 2 nights
Check in to the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge, before enjoying the afternoon at leisure to relax on the lodge’s sundeck, or perhaps visit the nearby village. Having settled in to your lodge, spend the early evening on the waterways of the Kinabatangan River and the Menanggul River, spotting wildlife with your specialist guide.
Days 10 - 12 : Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia
Stay at Borneo Rainforest Lodge for 2 nights
On arrival you will be met by your guide and driven in a private vehicle to Danum Valley through selectively logged forest, cocoa and soft-wood plantations before arriving at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge beside Danum River on the edge of 438 sq. km of undisturbed lowland rainforest. Spend your days exploring the forest for birds and mammals, leading up to an escarpment with ancient burial coffins. Trek to the waterfall for a dip in refreshing rock pools, aptly names the “Jacuzzi Pool”. The morning is spent spotting more proboscis monkeys, birds and other wildlife whilst en route back to Sandakan.
Days 12 - 15 : Gaya Island, Malaysia
Stay at Gaya Island Resort for 3 nights
Upon arrival you will be met by your driver and, after an early lunch, you will transfer to the airport for your flight to Kota Kinabalu. At Kota Kinabalu Airport you will be met and transferred to the jetty for your boat to Gaya Island Resort. This luxury resort is the perfect end to a holiday like this, relax in your stunning villa, enjoy diving snorkelling and nature walks, and experience some of the best food in Borneo.
