This ten-night Small Group Tour is perfect for those wanting to uncover the culture, landscapes and food of Japan. Experience the architecture, pop culture and neon lights of Tokyo and spend a night in a traditional ryokan in Hakone, with the dramatic backdrop of Mount Fuji. Be moved at the Peace Park and Museum in Hiroshima, visit the beautiful island of Miyajima and explore Japan’s traditional culture in Kyoto. The food will be a highlight of this tour; you will learn how to make your own bento box as well as sampling traditional Japanese food including eating at an izakaya in Tokyo and trying okonomiyaki in Hiroshima. Throughout the tour, you will be accompanied by an expert Tour Leader who will provide you with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the incredible places you visit.
Days 1 - 4 : Tokyo, Japan
Stay at Park Hotel Tokyo for 3 nights
On your arrival in Tokyo, you will be met and transferred to your accommodation for the next three nights. Get to know your Tour Leader and travelling companions over a group meal at an izakaya (Japanese pub) where you will sample a selection of Japanese cuisine. Spend the next two days exploring Tokyo, one of the biggest cities in the world. Discover Asakusa where you will get a sense of Japanese popular culture and visit the city’s most famous Buddhist temple – Senso-ji. Visit the Tsukiji outer market to see and perhaps sample some of the freshest fish in Tokyo. Explore the neighbourhoods of Ginza and Harajuku and visit Meiji Jingu – the most important Shinto shrine in Tokyo. Enjoy spectacular views over the city from the Metropolitan Government Building’s Observation Deck and discover Tokyo by night with a guided walk through Shinjuku, Tokyo’s skyscraper district.
Day 4 - 5 : Hakone, Japan
Stay at Yuugiriso Ryokan for 1 night
Travel by private coach to the peaceful lakeside town of Hakone. Visit the Open-Air Museum and discover its innovative sculptures and interactive artworks. Next, board a boat to cross Lake Ashi and alight to ascend the Komagatake Ropeway, where on clear days the view from the top is one of the best of Mount Fuji to be had anywhere. Tonight you will stay in a ryokan (traditional Japanese guesthouse) where you can have a soak in an onsen (geothermically heated hot springs) and enjoy an indulgent kaiseki dinner – multiple courses of Japanese haute cuisine.
Days 5 - 7 : Hiroshima, Japan
Stay at ANA Crowne Plaza Hiroshima for 2 nights
Board a bullet train and speed through the Japanese countryside to Hiroshima. The devastation suffered by the city in 1945 has made it famous the world over and many visit every year to pay their respects. The day finishes with a sobering but hopeful visit to Hiroshima’s Peace Park and Museum. The next day, take the ferry to the sacred island of Miyajima. Visit magical Itsukushima Shrine with its spectacular torii gates that at high tide appear to be floating out to sea, and Daisho-in Buddhist Temple with its tiny Buddha statues that line the stone pathways. There will some free time where you may wish to take the ropeway to the top of Mount Misen for spectacular views.
Days 7 - 11 : Kyoto, Japan
Stay at Royal Park Hotel Kyoto Sanjo for 4 nights
Depart Hiroshima for Kyoto, stopping en route at the UNESCO World Heritage listed Himeji Castle. Kyoto is the undisputed cultural capital of Japan and there is so much to see and do here that you will spend four nights taking in its delights. Enjoy a walking tour of Gion, Kyoto’s most famous geisha district. Visit pretty Ginkaku-ji Temple before walking along the Philosopher's Path to Eikan-do and Nanzen-ji Temples. Discover the thousands of red torii gates of Fushimi Inari-Taisha. Enjoy a hands-on Japanese cooking class where you will learn to make your very own bento box. Leave the city to visit Nara where you will see one of the largest Buddha statues in the world and stroll around the lovely Isui-en Gardens. The final night is a real highlight as you will be joined by a geisha expert and a maiko (apprentice geisha) or geiko so you can learn about geisha culture first hand. Finally, transfer to Kansai International Airport where the tour ends.

When to go
Although temperatures occasionally drop below freezing, winter (December to February) is usually reasonable. Spring (March to May) brings pleasant, warm days, and, of course, cherry blossoms – early April is probably the best time to view the blooms. Summer (June to August) is hot and muggy. Late June can see torrential rains. The temperature and humidity are at their worst in August. Apart from spring, autumn (September to November) is the most pleasant season as temperatures cool down to a cosy level and days are often clear and fine. Autumn also means the return of the dramatic foliage season, when the parks and green areas of the city mellow into varying hues of orange and red.
