Get under the skin of some of Mexico's top culinary destinations on this 9-night itinerary, exploring the capital, Mexico City, along with the charming and authentic colonial cities of Puebla and Oaxaca, each famed for its distinctive cuisine. Begin with 3 nights in Mexico City, which is home to a wide range of dining venues to suit all tastes, including a number of the top 50 restaurants in Latin America. From here, head to Puebla which is a short drive away and known as the home of mole Poblano, a rich sauce which is served alongside meat or poultry and is an absolute staple of Mexican cuisine. The final stop is Oaxaca City, a beautiful colonial town which boasts an incredible array of food markets and is renowned as the founding place of mezcal, tequila's rival spirit, along with a number of delectable regional dishes. Eating your way around Mexico is the perfect way to get to know this rich and vibrant country!
Days 1 - 4 : Mexico City, Mexico
Stay at Las Alcobas for 3 nights
Any culinary trip to Mexico should include a stay in Mexico City, which is home to some of the world's top restaurants and some mouthwatering street food venues. Fresh seafood gets shipped in from Veracruz and there is no shortage of other delights, from tacos in all manner of flavours to natural sweets. Stay for 3 nights in the upmarket neighbourhood of Polanco, at boutique Las Alcobas which boasts a critically acclaimed restaurant by chef Martha Ortiz, as well as a top concierge service who can recommend other incredible restaurants in the area. During your stay, embark on a guided taco tour to sample some of the city's best. For those who wish to splash out, we can also add a helicopter excursion to the vineyards of San Miguel de Allende, which are recognised for their world-class wines.
Days 4 - 7 : Puebla, Mexico City and Puebla
Stay at Hotel Cartesiano for 3 nights
From Mexico City, it's a 1.5-hour drive to Puebla, a colonial town with a spectacular backdrop of volcanoes and enough churches for every day of the year. As well as being famed for its impressive baroque architecture and hand painted talavera pottery, Puebla is known for its cuisine, the highlight of which is mole Poblano, a rich and delicious sauce which regularly accompanies meat or poultry dishes across the country. Spend some time at the hotel Meson Sacristia de la Compania which boasts its own cookery school and is the perfect place to get to know some of Mexico's most iconic dishes. Explore the city and eat your way around its many charming pavement cafés and gourmet restaurants. A cookery class has been included to show you the secrets behind Mole Poblano.
Days 7 - 10 : Oaxaca, Mexico
Stay at Casa Oaxaca for 3 nights
Continue on to Oaxaca, which is arguably the foodie capital of Mexico - home of mezcal, chapulines (grasshoppers) and even more mole varieties than you can possibly imagine. Chilli also features heavily. Stay at boutique hotel Casa Oaxaca which is home to one of the city's best restaurants and a must for dining out during your stay. Be sure to visit the local markets for an incredible selection of breakfasts and fascinating ingredients to bring back and create your own dishes. Spend your days taking part in cookery classes if you wish, or alternatively stick to sampling the cuisine, paying a visit to a mezcal distillery or two for a tasting session to learn about this iconic regional spirit which comes in unimaginable flavours.
This is the perfect itinerary for foodie visitors to Mexico, however it's also possible to add on time in San Miguel de Allende where you can visit some of Mexico's top vineyards or even Tequila, home of Mexico's signature spirit.
