This is an ideal itinerary for anyone who is looking to experience the southern right whale migration off the coast of South Africa, and the wonderful fynbos bloom that covers the South African countryside. The best time to experience both of these incredible phenomenons is from June to October, when whales can be spotted some ten metres from shore and fynbos has bloomed, offering visitors the unique opportunity to go on a flower safari. Starting your trip in Cape Town, you will have a couple of days to explore this incredible city, from the breathtaking views from Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula, to exploring the quirky and cool streets for boutique shops, tasty restaurants and coffee shop hangouts. Self-driving from Cape Town down the coast towards Hermanus, you will have plenty of opportunities to stop off for some land-based whale watching – these incredible animals migrate along the South African coast to calve. Your time here could also be spent on a host of activities, including a flower safari, walks and hikes, horse riding, a marine safari, quad biking and much more. Your trip ends at the Sanbona Private Game Reserve on the Western Cape on a ‘Big Five’ safari. A beautifully colourful and exciting itinerary, perfect for families or for couples seeking an understated adventure.
Day 1 - 2 : London to Cape Town
Your holiday starts in London with an overnight flight to Cape Town.
Days 2 - 4 : Cape Town, South Africa
Stay at Welgelegen for 2 nights
On arrival into Cape Town International Airport you will be met and privately transferred into the city where you will spend two nights at Welgelegen in a Deluxe Room with breakfast included.
On your second day a hire car will be delivered to your hotel allowing you to explore Cape Town and its surrounds. A trip up Table Mountain on the revolving cable car is a must and from here, the views over the city and Cape Point will entice you further to visit other areas including Robben Island where you can learn about the history of Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment as well as attractions of the Cape Peninsula which take in Chapman’s Peak, Hout Bay, Boulders Beach and Simonstown. The spectacular range of beaches such as Camps Bay, Muizenberg Beach and Kalk Bay are must sees, and a visit to the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens which showcases the finest collection of South African plants set on the slopes of the Table Mountain is also recommended.
Days 4 - 7 : Gansbaai, South Africa
Stay at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve for 3 nights
Today you will leave Cape Town and journey along the coastal route to Walker Bay where you will enjoy three nights at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve in a Luxury Suite on a full board basis where all activities will be included.
Located on a 2,500 hectare private nature reserve, there are plenty of activities for all, from horse riding to guided walks through the fynbos reserve and bird watching. This is one of the premier destinations for an ocean safari where informative marine and coastal drives can be combined with whale watching (charges apply locally) and shark cage diving (charges apply locally).
Your days can be spent at leisure to enjoy the activities as offered. Grootbos is home to more than 750 rare fynbos species and 120 bird species. Whilst on nature walks, your resident guide ensures that the scientific explanations of this unique flora are adapted into stories in such a way that nature comes to life for the guests.
During ‘Whale Season’ (June to November) every year, whales come in-shore to calve, and can be seen from as close as 10 metres from the coastal cliffs and beaches providing some of the best land-based whale watching opportunities in the world.
Days 7 - 10 : Route 60 - 62, South Africa
Depart Walker Bay and make your way into the Klein Karoo to the Sanbona Welcome Lounge where you will leave your hire car and will be transferred in a shared road transfer to Sanbona Gondwana, taking approximately 40 minutes.
Here you will spend the next three nights on safari in Sanbona Gondwana in a Suite where all meals, game drives, guided walks, and beverages will be included.
The vast Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is home to about 600 species of plants and it is intriguing to know that various species are flowering at different times throughout the year. It is also home to a rehabilitation program which aims to introduce White Lion back into the wild.
During your stay you will go on daily game drives where you could spot the 'Big Five' as well as nature walks, star gazing, bird watching, or to simply just relax. This is a great family-friendly, malaria-free camp.
Day 10 - 11 : Cape Town to London
You will be driven back to the Sanbona Welcome Lounge where you will be able to collect your hire car and drive back to Cape Town International Airport, which should take you around four hours in total. On arrival into the airport you will return your rental car before checking in for your flight home. Fly overnight to London.
