Hear all about one of our client’s recent trips to Antarctica, Falkland Islands and South Georgia, where she discovered some of the most remote, magical and stunningly beautiful places in the world.
Antarctica is well-known for being the coldest, driest and windiest location on earth, making it a continent of extremes and pretty inhospitable to life. But despite this, this ice-crowned wilderness is home to a variety of species of wildlife that have adapted to this harsh environment and are surviving despite the odds. Wildlife peaks in the austral summer months, when seals, whales, penguins and a large diversity of other seabirds migrate to the continent to breed and feed on the virtually unlimited supply of krill, crustaceans and fish. Here’s our lowdown on the continent’s unique wildlife…

Spend the day exploring Tierra del Fuego National Park, and enjoy a ride on the historic ‘End of the World’ train. Enjoy a one night stay in Ushuaia and sample the seafood, which as you'd imagine from this quirky port city, is very fresh and tasty.
Days 4 - 14 : Shetland Islands and Antarctic Peninsula, Antarctica
Stay at Akademik Ioffe for 10 nights
Your first couple of days will involve sailing the infamous Drake Passages. This is great time to watch albatross soar around the ship’s stern, or enjoy the lectures given on board to learn more about the history, geography and wildlife of the ‘White Continent’. Once you have arrived into the sheltered waterways of the Antarctic Peninsula, you will get the chance to explore further via Zodiac boats and marvel up close at nature's glory.
Colossal icebergs, huge glaciers and endless sheets of ice all float into view. Excursions may include visiting Neko Harbour, Wilhelmina Bay and Petermann Island, great for encountering Weddell, crabeater and elephant seals, and large colonies of the Gentoo, Chinstrap and Adelie penguins. Cast your eye to the water to hopefully catch a glimpse of humpback whales or orca. There are generally two excursions per day allowing you to explore this pristine environment and discover the wildlife (weather conditions permitting). On the excursions you will be accompanied by the expedition team who will help to widen your knowledge on the flora, fauna and history of the region.
Days 14 - 16 : El Calafate, Argentina
Stay at Esplendor El Calafate for 2 nights
After the Antarctic cruise it is back to exploring more of South America. Fly to El Calafate in the heart of Argentina's glacier region and check-in to your estancia-style hotel. Located 10 minutes from the town, Los Sauces provides a great base for outdoor adventures in Patagonia. Argentine Patagonia has got some of the world’s most rugged mountainous terrain, as well as some of the most sublime landscapes. During your time in El Calafate we have included a visit to the famous Perito Moreno glacier, known for being one of the only glaciers in the world still to be advancing.
