Yogyakarta City Tour
Spend the day discovering the highlights of Yogyakarta, including the Sultan's Palace and its Water Castle, a cigar factory and the district of Kotagede, which is famed for its silver industry.
This excursion departs in the morning for Taru Martani cigar factory, where you can learn about the cigar making process, from drying the tobacco leaves to preparing them for export.
The tour then continues to the Kraton (the Sultan of Yogyakarta’s palace), where you can pass through ornate reception halls, observe large pendopos (open-air pavilions built on columns) and visit a museum-like room where plans to overthrow the Dutch colonialists were conceived. Also within the grounds is the Taman Sari (water castle), which was designed in the 18th-Century as a royal pleasure park for the first Sultanate of Yogyakarta and his entourage. The sultan is said to have sat in the tower overlooking the central bathing complex, watching the goings-on below while being entertained by his harem.
The final stop on the tour is the hub of Yogyakarta’s silver industry, in the district of Kotagede, where you will witness a demonstration at a local workshop, before exploring the backstreets of this historic neighbourhood.
