A visit to the Self Employed Women’s Association who specialise in Chikankari – a fine embroidery technique with Mughal influences.
This tour takes you to SEWA, which stands for the Self Employed Women’s Association. It is an autonomous organisation of Chikankari artists. The organisation was set up in 1984 with a goal to help these women access the market directly without having to give their money away to the businessmen who exploited their talents. Chikankari is fine embroidery done in white cotton threads on plain muslin cloth and was introduced from Bengal to Lucknow. Most of the design motifs are Mughal and can be seen in the ornamentation of many Mughal building such as the Taj Mahal. On this tour you will learn not only about SEWA, but the techniques and history of Chikankari itself.
