Visit the Tatacoa Desert
Visit the incredible Tatacoa Desert today and learn about the geology and flora of this land and how climate changes have transformed the area, creating the spectacular rock formations to produce a vast sea of striking red crevasses and towers.
Morning pick up from your hotel in San Agustín and transfer to Neiva. “En route”, you’ll actually pass Neiva and drive for approximately 45 minutes to visit the spectacular Tatacoa Desert. The Tatacoa Desert is a tropical dry desert, which during the Tertiary Period was a lush valley, replete with flowers and trees. Gradual drying of the earth and increasing temperatures have left incredible rock formations and huge crevasses eroded by wind and water. Now only species that thrive in intense daytime heat survive; the desert is dotted with several species of cacti and is a favourite habitat for wolves, vipers, spiders and bats. The dramatic red scenery pictured in popular images of the Tatacoa pertains to the area called ‘Cuzco’, whilst further along in an area called ‘Los Hoyos’, the landscape changes as the rocks transform into grey dunes. A trip to the Tatacoa Desert is a delight for geologists, palaeontologists and photographers alike!
Private transfer. Please note that depending on road conditions, the journey between San Agusín and Neiva takes between 4 and 5 hours. There will be a stop at a roadside restaurant, where you may choose to purchase lunch, refreshments or a snack (not included).
The sun and heat is strong in the desert so we recommend taking ample water and sun protection.
