Visit the San Agustín Archaeological Park
Enjoy a half day visit to the fascinating San Agustín Archaeological Park, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995.
Today, you’ll be met at your hotel by your English-speaking guide and taken to one of the highlights of the south: the San Agustín Archaeological Park. There are several such sites dotted around Huila region but the San Agustín park is the most extensive, being home to the largest complex of pre-Colombian megalithic commemorative monuments, burial sites, terraces and structures and also the Fuente de Lavapatas site, a sacred monument carved into the stone bed of a stream.
At the park, your English-speaking guide will act as a translator for a local guide, who accompanies you around the park and teaches you the interesting history of this site and what is known about the civilisation that created the weird and wonderful statues on display today. Whilst some statues have suffered the test of time, many remain in remarkable condition, the intricacy of the original carving still stark, often revealing the characterful ancestral faces.
The earthen mounds and stone tombs were constructed in the Regional Classic period (1-900 AD) for prominent members of the region’s well documented chiefdom societies, which developed circa 1000 BC and is one of the Americas’ earliest complex societies. Your guide will walk you through the Mesitas, pointing out depictions of supernatural beings, animals and statuous celebrating the of momentous moments of human life such as birth and death. Head on to the ceremonial Fuente de Lavapatas before walking up the hill to the Lavapatas terrace, where your efforts are rewarded with beautiful views to the surrounding countryside.
Private tour. If you will be visiting one of the other archaeological sites later during your stay, please hold onto the small passport you are given at the site entrance.
