Visit the Jambay Lhakhang
Dating back to the 7th century, the Jambay Lhakhang is one of 108 temples built by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo to subdue a demoness. Exploring this site is a vivid insight into the religious beliefs of Bhutanese Buddhists.
Legend has it that the Jambay Lhakhang, along with 108 other temples dotted throughout the Himalayan region, was built in a single day by the Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo to pin down a demoness and quash her influence over Tibetan Buddhism. Alongside this intriguing tale, the temple is renowned for the Jambay Lhakhang Drup, a festival of dances, including the Ter Cham, or ‘Naked Dance’ and the Mewang (Fire Dance). Strolling around this temple complex you discover the rich cultural wealth of Bhutan’s religious beliefs and their grounding in ancient stories.
