Visit Shobak Castle
Once called "Mont Real," Showbak dates from the same turbulent period as Karak. It is perched on the side of a mountain, with a grand sweep of fruit trees below. The castle's exterior is impressive, with a foreboding gate and encircling triple wall.
Shobak Castle was originally built by the Crusaders in 1115 and managed to withstand Saladin’s armies for many years before an 18 month siege by Saladin’s army finally took the castle from the Crusaders in 1189.
The castle was subsequently taken by the Mamluks and underwent a number of changes from the original Crusader design, but interesting artefacts remain such as Quranic inscriptions, two churches, catacombs, Islamic tablets, Christian carvings, a Crusader cross, and what is even claimed to be Saladin’s throne. This experience is a self-guided tour but guides can be hired and paid for locally.
