Visit Kerak Castle
Built in 1161 by the Crusaders, Kerak is a perfect example of mediaeval castle design. The castle is a dark maze of stone-vaulted halls and passageways. Its most famous occupant was Reynald de Chatillon, who had a reputation for treachery and brutality.
The castle took Crusaders an astonishing twenty years to construct, and was finally finished in 1161. The castle changed hands between Reynald of Chatillon and Saladin; before passing in to Mamluk and then Ottoman hands, and influences of all inhabitants can be seen throughout the extensive remains, which include churches and a mosque.
This experience is a self-guided tour but guides can be hired and paid for locally.
