Visit ARCAS Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre
On the shores of Lake Peten lies an exceptional wildlife rehabilitation centre. Formed in 1989, the volunteers have received over 40 species per year and aim to improve the conservation of endangered animals and their natural habitats
ARCAS is a non-profit Guatemalan charity formed by a group of Guatemalans who wished to save their native wildlife. The centre was built to care for and rehabilitate wild animals that were in danger from being trafficked and sold on the black market or whose habitats were being ruined by construction. Now one of Central America's most successful rehabilitation centres, ARCAS received between 300 and 600 different animals every year and does an incredible job of raising awareness of the importance of conservation as well as reintroducing the animals to their natural habitat.
At the end of your visit, guests will be taken to Tayazal by boat where you can hike to a lookout point for panoramic views of the lake and islands.
