Traditional Tokyo Tour
With its distinctive blend of ultra-modern skylines and ancient traditions and spiritualism, Tokyo is a city of contrasts. On this full-day tour, you will be able to see both its historic buildings, gardens and customs as well as the modern day city.
This morning you will be met by your local guide at your hotel and take a journey on the Tokyo public transport system to The Imperial Palace. Still the official residence of Japan’s Imperial Family, the palace itself is not open to the public, however Kokyo Gaien, the large plaza in front of the palace is a wonderful place to learn about the Imperial history of Japan and make some important discoveries that will help you better understand the culture of the country.
From here, your guide will escort you to a local home for a traditional tea ceremony. A tradition that traces its roots back hundreds of years, the ceremony was an important period of quiet reflection for Samurai in between times of war and your host will help you understand each element of this highly ritualised practice.
Your education in Japanese customs will continue as your guide takes you to Meiji Shrine, an important late Edo-period Shinto shrine surrounded by lush, evergreen forests. Here you will be able to learn about Shinto rituals and beliefs which will be a familiar sight in Japan, including learning how to property enter and exit any Shinto shrine.
From Meiji Shrine, you can stake a stroll back to modern-day Tokyo through the tree-lined Omotesando, which is now the gateway to Tokyo’s high-end shopping districts, often compared to the Champs Elysees in Paris. Your day will end with a trip to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in the futuristic Shinjuku area of the city. Climb to the building’s 243-meter observation deck where you will be rewarded with a wonderful vantage point to see out over the entire city.
At the end of your tour, your guide will escort you back to your hotel, though you are welcome to part ways in Shinjuku to further explore yourself, or perhaps find somewhere for dinner.
