Tour of Beng Mealea
Head away from Siem Reap to explore the secluded and mysterious Beng Mealea. This expansive temple has the same layout as Angkor Wat, and whilst much less well preserved, the crumbling walls and encroaching tree roots provide an atmospheric experience.
Beng Mealea lies around 75 kilometres from the town of Siem Reap. It was discovered much later than most of the other Angkorian temples, and still very much has the feeling of being reclaimed by nature, although much of the denser foliage has been cleared.
The temple was built around the 12th century, and whilst much of the original architecture has fallen into disrepair there are still a number of impressive buildings and intricate carvings. Beng Mealea is surrounded by a huge 45-metre wide moat.
