Tokyo Garden and Fire Ceremony Tour
Away from the hustle and bustle of central Tokyo, this half-day tour takes you slightly off the tourist trail to explore one of the city’s finest gardens and then on to a residential Buddhist Temple to witness a traditional fire ceremony.
You will be met at your hotel by your guide who will take you to Tokyo district of Fukagawa using the public transport network. Here, you will make your way to the beautiful Kiyosumi Teien Gardens.
A classic Japanese ‘stroll garden’, Kiyosumi traces its origins back to the 1700s, though it really came into prominence in 1878 when it was purchased by the founder of Mitsubishi for the enjoyment of his staff and guests. Today the gardens are just as beautiful, where ponds, black pine, Taiwan cherries and hydrangeas have been planted especially to offer year-round splendour.
After exploring the gardens, take a short walk to the Fukagawa Fudo-do Temple. This imposing Buddhist temple is dedicated to Fudomyo, a fierce, wide-eyed representation of Buddha’s resolve. As the temple is well away from many of Tokyo’s more popular regions, visits are often quiet and reflective, however a particular highlight is the gom-kito ceremony. A Buddhist priest will create a large fire of consecrated wooden sticks to protect and grant the wishes of those who offered the sacred wood. The ceremony is accompanied by the chanting of sutras and a chorus of taiko drums, creating a dramatic and unique experience hard to find elsewhere in Tokyo.
After the ceremony, your guide will escorting you back to your hotel where you can enjoy the remainder of the day.
