Tokyo Art and Culture Tour
Japan’s art and distinct cultures are two of its most famous traditions. On this full-day tour, discover two of the most iconic, calligraphy and swordsmanship, as you get to try both first hand and learn about their origins.
This morning you will be met at your hotel by your expert local guide before being escorted to an Iaido class, using the excellent public transport network. Iaido is a form of swordsmanship dating back to the 1500s and focuses on smooth, fluid movements of the sword from its scabbard before returning it upon striking an opponent. You will be taught the history and uses of this discipline before getting your hands on a sword for a more practical demonstration, where you will be able to test your technique against bamboo or straw blocks.
From the sword comes the pen, as your guide will then take you for a lesson in Shodo, or Japanese calligraphy. An art form in its own right, each stroke of the brush must be completed in the right manner and order to complete each character (or kanji). You will be given a lesson in the art by a master calligrapher while learning the origins of Japanese text, before being given the chance to try for yourself and create a memorable souvenir.
Your final stop will be at the Samurai Museum in Shinjuku. Being one of Tokyo’s most famed concrete and neon regions, the small, traditional building of the museum is in perfect juxtaposition to its modern surroundings. On entry, you will get to learn about the origins of the Samurai, with a wonderful collection of armours, swords and written texts. After visiting the museum, you will be escorted back to your hotel by your guide, or you may choose to stay in Shinjuku and begin the evening at your leisure.
