The Chele La Pass and Hike to Kila Nunnery
Enjoy a wonderfully scenic drive to the Chele La Pass, the highest motorable pass in Bhutan a short distance from Paro. Take a leisurely walk to its highest point to soak up further mountain views before continuing to the cliffside Kila Nunnery.
Driving the 35km to Chele La is both an experience in itself and a journey to some beautiful day walks. Separating the Haa and Paro Valleys, the 3810 metre pass winds through spruce and larch forest, with mesmerising views of Mount Jomolhari and Jichu Drake, as well as the expansive Haa and Paro Valleys. Colourful prayer flags mark your arrival, offering a beautiful backdrop for the views.
From the pass you will walk approximately two hours up an incline to the highest point where you can enjoy further spectacular views over the surrounding mountains. Continue down the hills through hemlock and rhododendron forests to Kila Gompa, a nunnery inhabited by approximately 30 nuns built into the side of a cliff.
