Temple tour of Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram
A tour to the fascinating sites of Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram to explore the rock-cut temples that stand on the beach, dating back to the 7th century AD.
Located just outside Madras City, Mahabalipuram is a group of monumental rock-cut temples, set amidst palm trees on a long beach next to the Bay of Bengal. Mahabalipuram was once the main port and naval base of the great Pallava Kingdom in the 7th and 8th centuries and was later made their capital. The most famous landmark in the area is the Shore Temple, which stands alone on the shore. Built in the 7th century AD, it has three shrines, one dedicated to Lord Vishnu and the other two to Lord Shiva. Kanchipuram, the ancient city of temples, is one of the seven most sacred pilgrim centres for Hindus. The area was believed to have originally had 1000 temples, 126 of which survive today.
