Tea Ceremony in a Japanese Garden
This half day tour will introduce you to one of Japan's most enchanting traditions, the tea ceremony, helping you understand its importance in past and present Japan whilst also allowing you to experience the ceremony in a beautifully landscaped garden.
You will be met at your hotel by your local guide who will help you travel to Happo-en on the Tokyo public transport network. This early Edo-period garden was designed to show off the full beauty of any season, using specially selected flora. Designated in 1950 with the rather unique accolade of 'a spot which is beautifully viewed from any angle’, the garden makes for a relaxing break from the surrounding city and a great example of the art of the Japanese garden.
After exploring Happo-en, your guide will introduce you to a tea master, who will teach you the history and technique of the Japanese tea ceremony. Steeped in tradition and ritual, the ceremony has been an important part of Japanese culture for centuries. With the quiet contemplation interrupted by deliberate breaks of silence as the tea master brews the thick green tea, it is easy to fall under its spell.
After the ceremony, your guide will help you travel back to your hotel where you can enjoy the rest of your day as you wish.
