Taiko Drum Lesson
The Taiko drums have a long history in Japanese culture and folklore from religious ceremonies, Geisha performances and even wars. This private, hour-long lesson will teach you the origins and rhythms of the Taiko, complete with battle cries!
Today, you will make your own way to one of Kyoto’s Taiko Dojos (practice hall) where you will meet your teacher for an hour’s lesson on the Taiko Drums.
Dating back to around the 6th century where they were introduced from China, the drums are an important part of Japanese tradition. You will no doubt see Taiko around many temples in Japan and they are still important in ceremonies. Even today, the construction of the drums is very specialist and can take several years.
Your lesson will begin with some simple patterns of rhythm beaten using the Bachi (wooden sticks), and progress to form complete compositions as you learn how to piece each segment together. Your teacher will also help you perform the various poses and energetic yells, which are all part of the performance.
After the lesson, you will make your own way back to the hotel by whichever means you wish.
