Sukuh and Cetho Temples
Spend the day exploring the lesser-visited Hindu temples of Sukuh and Cetho located high on the slopes of Mount Lawu on this excursion from Yogyakarta.
Sukuh Temple, the first stop after you are collected from your Yogyakarta hotel, is surrounded by breathtaking scenery and located nearly 1,000-metres above sea level on the western slope of Mount Lawu. This isolated Hindu temple is noted for its unusual pyramidal shape, which is not too dissimilar in design to the Mayan temples of Central America. The temple is also noted for stone carvings and ornate relief sculptures.
After ample time to explore, you will continue to the 15th-Century Cetho Temple, situated higher up the slopes of Mount Lawu at 1,400-metres above sea level. This large, terraced temple is often shrouded in mist and the temperature is notably cooler than down on the plains. Dedicated to the deity Shiva, this temple is still used as a place of worship today. You will then be driven back to your hotel in Yogyakarta in the afternoon.
