The Soweto Tour takes you through one of the most famous townships, near Johannesburg. It is recommended you allocate 5 hours to this tour although an all day tour is recommended to see all the major highlights and landmarks.
Short for South West Township, this vibrant urban area is home to almost 2 million inhabitants and first came to the world's attention on the 16th of June 1976 with the Soweto uprising where 23 people died, mainly protesting students. During the Apartheid years it was a hotbed of political activity and today many famous landmarks commemorate the struggle and provide an insight into South Africa's historical journey up to the first democratic elections.
A half day will allow you a fleeting visit past all the major points of interest, such as Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Baragwanath taxi rank, Freedom Square, Hector Pieterson Memorial and Nelson Mandela's former home.
For those wanting a more in depth visit, a full day incorporating the Apartheid Museum is recommended. Lunch is usually a lively affair at one of the local restaurants serving traditional South African fare.
