Sierra Negra and Volcan Chico
Enjoy a full day excursion to the Sierra Negra and Volcan Chico.
Today you will get to witness and understand the extreme volcanic landscapes of the Galapagos with a full day hike on Isabela Island, one of the youngest and most volcanically active islands of the archipelago.
You will start the day by hiking up to the crater of the massive Sierra Negra volcano and then onward to the rim of the Volcan Chico. Be warned: this fascinating walk usually begins with some morning fog and drizzle that sometimes persists in the shadow of the volcano but the rewards are worth it! Despite the drizzle on your way up, you may see Galapagos hawk, finch, flycatcher and short-eared owl. When you reach the rim of the Sierra Negra crater, the second largest in the world after the Ngorongoro in Tanzania, the rewards for your efforts quickly become apparent. The crater is so large and the views so expansive that photos simply don't do it justice. Enjoy a break at the top to take it all in.
Later, as you approach Volcan Chico, you'll notice lizards scurrying among the rocks in this otherwise desolate, Mars-like landscape. From the volcano rim, enjoy more amazing views consisting of lava tubes and fumeroles. After the extreme landscapes of Volcan Chico, you'll stop for lunch in the shade of a 'jaboncillo' tree and benefit spectacular views over the central and northern parts of Isabela Island. Ask your guide to point out Fernandina, Pinzon and Santa Cruz in the distance. The descent then completes your hiking day (16km in total). Time to relax on the beaches of Puerto Villamil ends your action-packed day.
